Physical ports are used for management purposes and provide an out-of-band method of managing Cisco products. Each Cisco router and switch has a console port, and some have an auxiliary port. Out-of-band means that management tasks are performed without affecting the traffic traversing the Cisco product. Interfaces are used to connect network devices together. such as connecting a switch to a router or connecting a switch to a PC. the interface connects to the backplane of the switch and router. Interfaces can also be used for management purposes. but doing so can affect the performance of IOS devices. This connection is called an in-band connection.
