ccna chapter 5 exam quizlet. The switch port receives the data frame normally even though it is an Access mode port; for data traffic sent by the computer it maintains the original frame format and is sent to the switch after the IP phone.8.3 Inter-VLAN Routing OverviewAfter VLANs are divided on the switch, computers between VLANs cannot communicate with each other. Inter-VLAN communication is achieved with the help of the Layer 3 routing function. The device that implements the routing function can be a router or a Layer 3 switch. In practice, most of the inter-VLAN routing is achieved through a Layer 3 switch, because it uses hardware forwarding and has more data processing power than a router. Layer 3 switching to implement inter-VLAN routing is described in Chapter 13.8.3.1 Legacy Inter-VLAN RoutingTraditional inter-VLAN routing is implemented by connecting different physical router interfaces to different physical switch ports to perform inter-VLAN routing. Traditional inter-VLAN routing is shown in Figure 8.2, where two PCs are on the same switch but are in different VLANs, so they must also use routers to communicate with each other. To achieve communication between them, you can have an Ethernet interface on each VLAN connected to a router. Configure the IP address on the router's Ethernet interface and the default gateway on the PC to point to the router's Ethernet interface address in the same VLAN. With this approach, if you want to implement communication between N VLANs, the router will need N Ethernet interfaces and will also occupy N ports on the switch, which is poorly scalable and not feasible in practice. ,8.3.2 Single-Arm RoutingSingle-armed routing enables the delivery of data traffic between multiple VLANs in a network through a single physical interface, and single-armed routing enables inter-VLAN communication as shown in Figure 8.3. The router requires only one Ethernet interface to connect to the switch, and this port on the switch is set up as a Trunk port. Multiple sub-interfaces are created on the router to act as default gateways for different VLAN hosts. Sub-interfaces are software-based virtual interfaces that are associated with a single physical interface. The subinterfaces are configured in the router's software, and each subinterface is configured with an IP address and an IEEE 802.lq encapsulated VLAN, respectively, to achieve a correspondence between the subinterface and the VLAN. The subinterfaces are configured into different subnets according to their respective VLAN assignments. Inter-VLAN routing can be implemented using the router physical interfaces and sub-interfaces, and the router physical interface and sub-interface pairs are shown in Table 8-1.Chapter 8 VLANs, Trunk, and Inter-VLAN Routing .107 .PC1 PC2 1721621/24 172.16.3.2/24172.16.2.1/24172.16.3.2/24
