The contents of the /var/log/maillogosyslog.conf file vary from OS to OS, and this example is just to give the reader an idea of how the file is constructed.Log management is an area of interest to many people. Many organizations have a need to keep logs, for example, for a year. The size of log files can grow rapidly (depending on how the selector fields and action fields in the syslog.conf file are set), which can create serious challenges in storing and querying log information. These challenges can be addressed by regularly rotating and compressing log files with a log management tool such as newsyslog. Newsyslog is not a system daemon, and by default, it runs once an hour. A newsyslog configuration file is shown in Figure 9.5.The newsyslog configuration file shown in Figure 9.5 contains fields for the log file name, file owner (group), permissions, when to rotate the file, optional flags, and the program that signals when to rotate the log. As you can see from line 2 of the newsyslog configuration file, the file to be rotated is /var/log/all.logo Optionally, you can have the newsyslog configuration file display the file owner and the genus group, but this example does not do so. The mode field is used to set the permissions for the log files, and the count field is used to describe how many copies of the rotated log files should be kept. Line 2 of this configuration file shows permissions of 600 and a file count of 7Osize field is used to trigger log rotation. Log rotation is triggered when the size of the log is higher than the size field value, or when the time exceeds the mark in the field's setting. The size field on line 2 of this configuration file has an asterisk (*), indicating that newsyslog will ignore this field. The flag field is used to give additional instructions, for example, how to compress the rotated files.
