There are many tools available for troubleshooting connections on IOS devices, including Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), ping, tracerout, Telnet, and debugo These tools are discussed at the end of this chapter.Authentication Objectives 16.0116.1 The router's configuration fileThe configuration file, briefly described in Chapter 10, contains commands to configure the IOS device and is typically located in the following three places: RAM, NVRAM, and an external server (such as a TFTP, FTP, HTTP, or Secure Copy (SCP) server). The configuration currently in use by the router is located in RAM and can be backed up (saved) to NVRAM or an external server.As stated in Chapter 10, to execute commands related to configuration files (including the show command), you must be in privileged EXEC mode. In addition, the running configuration of an IOS device is not automatically saved to NVRAM; you must perform this task manually using the command copy running-config startup-config. The next few subsections describe how to manipulate the configuration file.
