This virtual IP address exists as part of the HSRP configuration and is an additional configuration option compared to the common ip address interface subcommand. This virtual IP address is on the same subnet as the IP address of that interface, but it is a different IP address. The router then automatically creates a virtual MAC address. All cooperating HSRP routers are aware of these virtual addresses, but only HSRP-active routers use them at any time.A host treats these virtual IP addresses as its default router address, not as the interface IP address of any router.
